“Reality truly exists.”
Now, if you’re familiar with my work you’ll know that this is actually an article of faith, but, as it’s the basis of literally all thought and action, it isn’t in any way worth debating. So, we take it on faith and we move forward. But what do we move forward to? What logic follows from “reality truly exists?”
First, we take it that reality is objective if it really exists. It is independent of our minds. It is not subjective. It is what it is – nothing less, and nothing more. Our attempts to describe reality are, however, necessarily either less, or more, as they are imperfect. As we’ve previously discussed we are subject first to the paradigm of perspective: we are limited in our senses. We also suffer imperfect reason. As a result every attempt to describe reality will too suffer from these defects. It is not our lot to know, with perfect fidelity, this objective world. Not in this life, anyhow.
So then, if a perfect knowledge is out of our grasp what then should we grasp at? The answer, rather obviously, is a more perfect knowledge and understanding of things. This can be viewed as akin to an exponential graph in approaching, but never reaching infinity.
Every attempt to describe reality will be flawed, but each variation will be uniquely flawed. These unique flaws will, necessarily, render of any two competing visions one that is more correct, and one less correct – even if only in the slightest, nearly imperceptible manner.
Another way to view this is that because reality is objective there is always a correct answer: that which represents the objective world with perfect fidelity. As such any two non-identical descriptions of reality, both being wrong, must be wrong by a varying, and different degree. One is always more right. Because they are different, they are never equal.
This same analysis can be applied to any first principles of faith (beyond that of an objective reality). So long as the first principles themselves are identical (which makes them very nearly as an objective reality), the logic that flows from them forming specific answers from general rules will render of any two views one more, and one less correct. Again, because they are different, they are never, ever equal.
This logic, applied to a people holding a common first principle(s), necessarily leads to the conclusion that, because there is always a right answer (even if unobtainable in practice), and because two dissimilar wrong answers are never equally wrong, that relativity has not a leg to stand on in arguing for equal treatment of ideas, worldviews, or descriptions of reality.
Of any two worldviews, rendered down to their particulars and compared accordingly, there is always one that is of greater fidelity to objective reality and/or first principles of faith, and of faith systems there is always one of greater fidelity to our objective world.
This argument is a relativity killer. Postmodernism has nowhere to hide but in a reversion to nihilism. So go forth knowing that your faith - your American Christian heritage - built this great country. Go forth knowing that your faith objectively and truly has no equal. Go forth knowing that we shall know them by their fruits, that our fruits are good indeed, and multiply the faithful.

The deconstructionists seem only to address this ‘imperfect’ (sensory) processing level, ensnared in language and projecting the symbolic as literal. Kant, Wittgenstein….. describing subjective perception & expression which later theorists ran with, feeding into the Everything Is A Social Construct belief - god(s) in the image of Man. Mind forged manacles. The ever decreasing circles of identification with subjectivity and the denial of objectivity. Thanks for linking me to this piece of yours. Enjoyed it very much.
